In 1883 Magnus Volk opened an
electric powered railway along the seafront at Brighton. Although not quite the
first example of electric traction in the world it was certainly the first
proper electric railway in Britain. Today it holds the deserved position of
being the oldest remaining operating electric railway in the world.
This website, supported by the
Volks Electric Railway Association (V-E-R-A), takes you on a
tour of the railway from construction to the present day. For further
information see the links page or join
VERA and support this unique and important
railway. |
